In the USA , federal social security was never enough for retirees to live on. Ever since the 1930s.
Instead of fighting a constant increase in the federal social security monthly payment, unions fought for privately negotiated pensions from their employers.
This all worked good Until the current general, national and world wide economic and financial crisis created by Wall Street & Brussels corporate elites.
In this crisis the barbaric greed of the 1% wealthy is destroying these private pensions AND threatening the federal social security system.
This ny times article describes the human suffering. It barely scratches The surface.
The maneuvering by the greedy corporations and their politicians is only partially described.
Our TUI must continue to describe this chapter our class's struggle for economic and social justice.
You may want to put this article and my comment on the TUI PENSIONERS WEBSITE.

Pensions in multiemployer plans were once believed to be extremely reliable, but changing economic circumstances have left vulnerable the pools and the federal insurance plan meant to support them.=
