Press Release 1712 “Wednesday of the Retirees”
In recent days, the media has revealed the government's intention to send a bill to Congress to reform the pension system. In general terms, it would involve raising the minimum retirement age, defunding the system by reducing or eliminating employer contributions and removing current tax contributions. Clearly, this is a gross attack on the system with the aim of creating the conditions for its bankruptcy and generating the social consensus necessary for its privatization. In this case, we know that the objective is to benefit the financial sector to the detriment of the legitimate interests of the working class. We already know this story and it was a failure called AFJP and it is also clearly demonstrated in the experience of Chile, for example.
On the other hand, the government announced that it will not extend the pension moratorium that expires on March 23. It is estimated that only three out of ten male workers and one out of ten female workers will be able to retire from then on.
In this context, the government of President Javier Milei understands that the responsibility for this reality lies with the workers and not with the employers who did not register their employees as required by law or with the levels of unemployment that lead to precariousness and greater labour exploitation, for example, and all of this with the complicity of the State, which has systematically failed, government after government, to comply with its legal obligation to constitute itself as a “labour police”.
This conduct of the State is reflected even more seriously in the provisions of the Ley Bases, which accepts and “rewards” the violation of labour regulations by employers, while taking the repression of union struggles of both active and retired workers to unconstitutional limits. Surely for Milei, the capitalists who violate labour laws must be “heroes” as he defined evaders and currency fugitives.
The National Coordinating Board of Retired and Pensioner Organizations believes it is necessary to promote the dissemination and debate of our pension system project based on its public, distribution, solidarity and intergenerational nature, led and administered by its true owners, who are the active and retired workers. We workers have proposals.
Retirement is not a subsidy for old age or poverty. It is a deferred salary.
